Your First Keto Grocery Run, Simplified

Stock the kitchen once and the week gets much easier. Here's the aisle-by-aisle list.

Your first keto grocery trip doesn't need to restock the whole kitchen. Plan a few simple meals, buy the ingredients for those, and pick up a handful of staples. This is a shopping checklist; if you want a broader reference of which foods fit keto, see the food list:

Before you go

  • Pick three or four dinners you already know you'll make
  • Check what you already have in the fridge and pantry
  • Write your list by store section so you're not doubling back

What to buy first

Produce

  • Spinach and mixed greens
  • Broccoli and cauliflower
  • Zucchini and peppers
  • Avocados
  • Lemons

Protein

  • Eggs
  • Chicken thighs
  • Ground beef
  • Salmon or shrimp
  • Rotisserie chicken

Dairy and fats

  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Cheese
  • Heavy cream
  • Full-fat Greek yogurt

Pantry extras

Salt, pepper, garlic, olives, canned tuna and a few nuts. That is genuinely all you need to begin.

Label-reading basics in the aisle

  • Check the serving size first
  • Look at total carbohydrate and fiber
  • Watch for added sugar in sauces, dressings, sausages and flavored yogurts
  • Glance at the ingredient list — shorter and familiar is usually easier

Build a simple cart

For each dinner, put one protein, one vegetable and one fat in the cart. Three easy dinners from this list might be salmon with asparagus, taco bowls, and egg roll in a bowl:
