The Simple Keto Food List for Beginners

No apps, no math. Just a clear list of foods to reach for so you always know what's on the plate.

A grocery basket filled with fresh keto-friendly produce and proteins

Most keto confusion is grocery-store confusion. Once your kitchen holds the right basics, cooking gets dramatically simpler.

Eat freely

  • Eggs and poultry
  • Beef, pork and lamb
  • Fish and shellfish
  • Leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables
  • Olive oil, avocado oil, butter
  • Cheese, cream and full-fat Greek yogurt

Eat carefully

  • Berries — a small handful, not a bowl
  • Nuts and seeds — easy to overeat
  • Low-carb packaged snacks — check the label, not the front of the box

A note on labels

Look at total carbohydrate, then subtract fiber. If the ingredient list is long and unfamiliar, it usually is not doing much for you.

Leave off for now

Sugar, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, most fruit juice and sweetened drinks. Removing these does most of the work on its own.
